IKE SHOULD STEER CLEAR OF MISSISSIPPI BUT THE GULF WILL BE ACTIVE WITH LARGE SWELLS

Hurricane Ike should remain far enough away from the Mississippi coast to keep the worst of the weather well south and west. The biggest problem I see from Ike for the region is an increase in swells from the Gulf of Mexico. With Ike being such a large hurricane, its wind field will send out large ocean swells that will begin to affect the northern Gulf Coast soon. I strongly encourage you to visit weather.gov, type in your Zip Code and then look for and read the forecast discussion for your area. This will give important information about rip currents, sea state and so forth. Even though Ike is forecast to make landfall in Texas, its effects will be felt along the Mississippi Gulf Coast- just be mindful of this and use common sense when out in the water.
