This is a visible satellite photo of a typical tropical storm just off the coast of North Carolina. At this point the system is named (this was Claudette in 1997). Tropical storms have winds from 39mph to 73mph and can produce a mild storm surge if they come ashore under the right circumstances. The next stage of development is a hurricane.
